Today I took a mesmerizing field trip to the Prima Descecha landfill in San Juan Capistrano. It was fantastic. I got to ride in a huge truck way up high where I could see everything. Randy showed me and my mom around: where the methane comes out of the ground and gets turned into energy that they sell to the gas company, where the trash trucks dump their loads of trash, where the dozers and crushers move it around and mash it down. It was really cool. Now I know how much trash people make because I saw a lot of it! We saw lots of birds too.
We also saw where they crush the asphalt so when it rains the crushers and dozers won't slide around when they are crushing all that trash.
I highly recommend this field trip to anyone. I also recommend the videos titled "Where the Garbage Goes" at Littlehardhats.com and "Real Wheels: Truck Adventures." There is a lot of information how recycling gets done too.

Merrick (& Merrick's Mum);
What an exciting day for you two! I love that you have taken an interest in environmental issues; (OK an interest in trash and trucks will suffice for now). You know, your mother and I try to keep each other informed about the environment and are both trying to make southern california (and the earth in general), a cleaner place for you and your friends when you grow up. Enjoy all your future field trips and outings and keep watching those great videos. Thanks for the info about your day today Merrick.
